The name Sevan is of Urartian origin, derived from Siuna which means “county of lakes”. Situated 3km from the shore of Sevan Lake, is the most popular resort and town of Sevan.
The history of this city begins from 1842 when it was called Yelenovka after the wife of Russian Emperor Nikolai. It was renamed Sevan in 1935 in honour of Sevan Lake.
Sevan is a popular tourist centre, not just for its lake but for its history and many sights, Sevanavank Monastery and the ancient archaeological monument of Lchashen to mention a few.
