India

Celebrating 25 Years of tour excellence
Close

Originating from the Gangotri Glacier in the Himalayas, the mighty Ganges River is over 2,500km in length. It’s a place of profound cultural and spiritual importance and integral to the shaping of India’s social geography. The ashes of thousands of people are scattered on it every day, and those who bathe in it believe their sins to be washed away. Many of India’s oldest cities began life along its banks, and today over 400 million people live by the river – many earning their livelihood from it.

Midway along the Ganges, you’ll find the sacred Hindu city of Varanasi – one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world. Every day, thousands gather here in pilgrimage, celebration or ceremony, or simply to perform daily chores along the riverbanks. Spend time here observing the mesmerising Ganga Aarti ceremony, with its rhythmic chants, flickering oil lamps and prayers dedicated to the river.

Upstream from the former capital of the British Raj, a voyage along the Lower Ganges explores the unique religious heritage of Bengal and offers a fascinating glimpse into former European colonies. Uncover thriving indigenous local crafts and artisans as you sail through the expansive Ganges Delta. This region is humming with life, with over 300 million people sustained by the delta's extensive water systems and natural resources.
