Cuenca meaning basin is Ecuador’s third largest city, yet it still retains its pleasant provincial air.
Its red tiled roofs, cobblestone streets, flowery plazas and museums make it very special and an ideal setting for the many festivals and events in the area.
Much like most of Ecuador Cuenca’s colonial past it is well preserved and houses a smaller colonial quarter in the centre of the city that is UNESCO world Heritage listed. It is to a smaller scale then the one found in Quito but just as impressive.
The city is also rimmed by rivers and so provides views of the natural Southern Highland landscapes which contrast other more coastal areas of Ecuador.
