A scenic 50 kilometre drive from Bagan, Mount Popa (Flower Mountain) has been a site of Nat worship for over 1,000 years, and remains an important pilgrimage spot for both Nat and Buddhist worship today. The mountain itself is an extinct volcano, but its most famous sight is Popa Taungkalat, a monastery perched dramatically on top of a sheer rocky outcrop, topped with golden stupas. There are 777 steps that wind their way up to the monastery - and a healthy population of macaques that call them home. From the summit the views over the surrounding landscapes are spectacular.
