Hue's Imperial Citadel was once at the very heart of Vietnam - the home of the Nguyen Emperor and the royal family from 1804 until 1945. A city within a city within a citadel, with the Forbidden City at its centre, the whole complex is still well protected by 2 kilometre by 2 kilometre ramparts and a moat.
Although badly damaged during the wars with France and the US, the structure is still impressive. From what remains you’ll have no trouble imagining the grandeur that once existed here when the emperor, his family and the royal concubines wandered the halls, pavilions and gardens.
