Steeped in unique legend and folklore, Chiloe is spectacularly windswept, rainy and lush cluster of islands in the Pacific Ocean. With a different essence to the rest of Chile, its seafaring folk, fiercely proud of their heritage, live in colourful ‘palafitos’ (wooden houses on stilts over the water), surrounded by rolling hills and thick forest. Chiloe Island, the largest of the archipelago, is famous for its wooden churches built by 19^th century missionaries, 16 of which are UNESCO-listed and the local curanto (stew) is a must try!
