Located 3686 kilometres off the coast of Chile in the midst of the Pacific Ocean and home to the famous stone 'moai', Easter Island is one of the most isolated and enigmatic destinations on the planet. This tour extension fits perfectly with our Chile: Top to Toe tour; learn about its mysteries from your local guides and gives you ample time to explore its incredible beauty for yourself.
On arrival, you’ll be met and transferred to your hotel. The remainder of the day is yours to relax or begin soaking up the unique atmosphere of Hanga Roa, the island's only town and gateway to the fascinating culture of Rapa Nui.
Discover the unique landscapes and archaeological treasures that line Easter Island's dramatic south and east coasts. Visit the unrestored ceremonial platforms of Vaihu and Akahanga, believed to be the burial place of the legendary King Hotu Matua, before continuing to Rano Raraku, the volcanic quarry where almost 900 moai were carved. Wander amongst the many statues scattered across the volcanic slopes before arriving at Ahu Tongariki, where 15 magnificent restored moai stand proudly overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Later, visit Te Pito Kura, a site steeped in legend and known as the Navel of the World', before ending the day at the golden sands of Anakena Beach, where restored moai create one of the island's most memorable settings.
Today's exploration reveals more of Easter Island's extraordinary history and enduring traditions. Begin at the ceremonial complex of Tahai, home to beautifully restored moai and the island's only statue with reconstructed coral eyes. Continue to the museum for a fascinating introduction to Rapa Nui's geology, archaeology and cultural heritage before visiting Hanga Roa's church and artisan market. See how traditional Rapa Nui culture remains part of everyday island life as you explore the island's only town. This afternoon, discover Ahu Akivi, where seven restored moai are said to represent the legendary explorers sent by King Hotu Matua. Finally, visit Puna Pau, the quarry that supplied the distinctive red volcanic stone used to carve the pukao, or topknots, that crown many of the island's famous statues.
