book your holiday to Croatia with Wendy Wu Tours
Croatia holidays are a beguiling mix of unspoilt natural beauty and exquisitely preserved history. At the crossroads of competing empires for millennia, you’re as likely to stumble on the remains of a roman villa, as you are a Napoleonic fort or a Venetian palace dotted amongst the spectacular coastal and mountain scenery.
Croatia's extraordinary coastline has to be seen to be believed. Idyllic pebbly coves, backed by thickly carpeted pine clad slopes, gaze out over the sparkling waters of the Adriatic to a horizon filled with innumerable islands. Glorious sun-filled days spent sailing between tranquil uninhabited anchorages and glamourous ports are the stuff that dreams are made of.
Tear your gaze away from the ocean for just a moment and you’ll discover a wonderland of rocky peaks and dramatic canyons. Jewel in the natural crown is the Plitvice Lakes National Park, A UNESCO World Heritage listed region of spectacular beauty; sixteen emerald lakes are linked by picturesque waterfalls and surrounded by forests that are home to deer, bears, wolves, boars and rare birds.
Ruled in turn by Rome, Byzantium, Venice, Austria-Hungary and the Soviet Union, to say Croatian history has been turbulent is something of an understatement. The upside of all this upheaval is an incredible legacy of historic cities, towns and villages. Wander along the Imposing medieval city walls of Dubrovnik, explore the ruins of Roman palaces in Split, discover elegant Venetian architecture in Hvar and Neo-baroque boulevards in Zagreb. Croatia holidays are a real cultural melting pot.
Croatia offers a wealth of wonderful sights and experiences. What better way to explore them than on a Wendy Wu tour?
Croatia’s capital is a charming city of grand Austro-Hungarian architecture, leafy parks and lively squares. Divided between the historic Upper and Lower Towns, Zagreb is home to colourful streets, historic churches and bustling cafés.
Perched on the hill above the city, Zagreb’s historic Upper Town, or Gornji Grad, developed from the medieval settlements of Gradec and Kaptol. Its cobbled streets lead to St Mark’s Square, home to the distinctive St Mark’s Church with its colourful tiled roof. Nearby, the Stone Gate, Lotrš?ak Tower and historic Baroque buildings offer a glimpse into Zagreb’s medieval past.
Croatia’s oldest and largest national park is renowned for its 16 turquoise lakes, linked by a series of cascading waterfalls and surrounded by dense woodland.
Formed by natural travertine barriers over thousands of years, the lakes create a spectacular landscape of clear water, waterfalls and wooden walkways
Known as the ‘Pearl of the Adriatic’, Dubrovnik’s medieval Old Town is enclosed by imposing stone walls overlooking the sea.
Inside, the marble-paved Stradun leads past elegant palaces, churches and squares, while the city walls offer spectacular views across the terracotta rooftops and Adriatic coastline.
Croatia’s second-largest city grew around the 1,700-year-old Diocletian’s Palace, built by the Roman emperor Diocletian as his retirement residence.
Today, the palace forms the heart of the city, with ancient columns, stone courtyards and Roman cellars woven into the streets of the Old Town.
Beyond the palace, the lively Riva waterfront and nearby Marjan Hill gives spectacular views over the Adriatic Sea.
Zadar has a history spanning more than 3,000 years, with Roman ruins, medieval churches and Venetian architecture found throughout its historic centre.
The Old Town is home to the Roman Forum and the 9th-century Church of St Donatus, while the waterfront features the unique Sea Organ, which creates music as waves pass through its stone pipes.
