Sapporo is a modern city, bought into being as part of the development of Hokkaido Island during the Meiji Period (mid-1800s) to be its capital. Designed on the advice of foreign specialists, the city is laid out in an American-style grid system and has become Japan’s fifth largest city. The city is best known for its proximity to fantastic ski slopes and its annual Snow and Ice Festival, but there is so much more to appeal. It is a dynamic place to be, with a big foodie scene (particularly famous for ramen and beer), has a great café scene and nightlife and brilliant shopping – a wonderful vibrant place to spend some time.
