Artfully hidden in the rock faces and valleys of the pink-hued desert, Petra is a place that sparks the imagination and inspires exploration.
Long a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, Petra was the capital of the ancient Nabataean kingdom.
Founded close to lucrative trades routes, by 1AD the city was flourishing with over 20,000 inhabitants and a wealth of spectacular architecture, such as the Treasury and Monastery, which can still be admired in their full glory today.Following its decline, Petra was lost to the desert to all but locals and desert nomads, until the 19th century when explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt brought it to the attention of the world.
A huge site, with much to discover, make sure you are here in the early morning or as the sun sets to enjoy the light playing with the colours of the rocks, a spectacular sight.
