Known as the Flaming Cliffs, due to the clay soil glowing red at sunset, Bayanzag means "rich in saxaul shrubs", named for a thorny bush measuring approximately two metres high, found among the sand, rock, and open plains of the surrounding Gobi Desert.

It is in these sand cliffs that many dinosaur fossils and eggs were found by palaeontologist Roy Chapman Andrews in 1922, including a horned, herbivorous, two-metre-long unidentified dinosaur, which was later named the protoceratops Andrews, after his discovery. You can now see the fossils of these fascinating creatures in the museum in Ulaanbaatar.

Although easily spotted through an amateur's eyes, it is illegal to remove any fossils without the appropriate permits.
