Bagan is best known for one, staggering thing - its temples. Between the 9th and 13th centuries, when the Kingdom of Bagan was unifying the regions that make up Myanmar we know today, a huge plain caught in a bend of the Irrawaddy River was, bit by bit, covered in a staggering array of temples, stupas and pagodas. At the peak of the kingdom there were said to be 10,000 scattered across the expanse, but today there are just over 2,000. Some are still in good condition, many have been restored and a few are still in constant use – stand high on one of the temples to see the silhouettes of thousands of others amongst the lush trees of the plain is a breathtaking experience.

Bagan is also the gateway to the incredible Mount Popa, located just an hour and a half from Bagan and an easy day trip.
