Bodhnath has dominated Kathmandu’s skyline for centuries, its great Buddha eyes surveying the city below. Once an important stop of the trade route between Tibet and Nepal, Tibetan traders would stop to rest and pray here before heading out to tackle the route through the Himalaya. It has become the holiest Tibetan Buddhist temple outside Tibet, and was made all the more so by those who fled to Nepal from Tibet in the 1950s and settled around the monuments base. One of the world’s largest stupas, Bodhnath is thought to have been built in the 14th century, its origins swathed in mystery. Today it is a vibrant place, full of pilgrims, prayer wheels and yak butter candles, and is one of the best places to learn about Tibetan Buddhist culture.
