Phewa is the largest of eight lakes that occupy the Pokhara Valley, which itself means ‘valley of the lakes’ – in fact, it’s the second largest lake in the country. Legends tells that it was created by the goddess Barahi Bhagwati, who flooded the valley after the wealthy inhabitants scorned her when she was in beggar form. The temple that you’ll see at the heart of the lake, Tal Barahi, is dedicated to her. Whilst on one side of the lake is the city of Pokhara with its ‘Lakeside’ area that provides a vibrant haven for tourists, the rest of the shore is clustered with tracts of beautiful forest, filled with flora and fauna. Phewa’s biggest boon though, is that it acts as a giant mirror for the surrounding mountains, creating beautiful reflections of their snowy peaks.
