Japan does tend to have higher prices for Western wines due to import taxes, and portion sizes can be smaller than what many travellers are used to. Regarding tipping and service charges: in Japan, service charges (typically 10–15%) are often added automatically in restaurants and bars, especially for drinks. Tipping is not customary and can sometimes even be seen as rude but I can see how the service charge on wine could cause confusion. We'll review our pre-tour materials to make this clearer for future guests.
