The area first ear-marked by the Portuguese, who landed in this area of Sri Lanka and built a fort, Colombo’s Fort District today is an eclectic mix of architectural styles and a vibrant place to explore. The Portuguese fort was built in the 16th century, was taken by the Dutch in 1656 who expanded it further, before it was handed over to the British to become a centre of administration. In 1870 the fort’s walls were knocked down. Many of Sri Lanka’s government buildings are still in this area, which is also still full of lovely examples of colonial architecture.
