Thimpu is the capital of Bhutan and the city is a hive of commercial exuberance which constantly challenges the country's historical conservatism. The rate of change in the last few years has been dramatic and vehicle traffic, virtually unheard of a few years ago, is driving the need for an ever-growing road network and a construction boom.

Thimpu is managing to retain much of its traditional charm and character as the new developments continue around it. Crimson-robed monks, Indian labourers, government ministers clad in ghos and kiras and tourists all share the pot-holed pavements. In addition to its traditional Buddhist sights and attractions, Thimpu offers a growing choice of cafes, bars, nightclubs, and restaurants in which to dine, although finding a balance between the old and the new is the key to getting the most out of this captivating city.
