Construction of this gigantic Shakyamuni Buddah statue began in the mountains of Bhutan in 2006 and was concluded in 2015. It overlooks the city of Thimpu and was built in honour of the 60th anniversary of the fourth king Jigme Singye Wangchuck.
Being one of the largest Buddha’s in the world at almost 52 meters, and made of bronze and gilded in gold, one will not realise that you are in fact also looking at more than 125 000 buddha statues that have been incapsulated within its chest.
The throne upon which this statue sits is a mediation hall, and it is believed to fulfil two prophesies: the 1st from the 8th century, that there would be 2nd Buddha who will promote peace and harmony around him and the 2nd that a statue would be built in the region to bestow blessings, peace and happiness upon the entire world.
