This temple was an important example of Armenian architecture and constructed between 643 – 652 AD using unique designs and techniques that globally influenced architecture. It stands 45 meters tall with no supporting columns and is now listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The designs on its exterior feature eagle capitals
It remained standing for 320 years before it collapsed in the 10th century with no references to the cause of its collapse, although some speculations allude to either an earthquake or as a result of Arab raids. Excavated and partially reconstructed in the 20th century the cathedral boasts many columns supporting carved arches.
The amazing backdrop to this cathedral is the dormant volcano Mount Ararat with its legend of angry gods sending a flood to punish humankind, and once it subsided the only family left on earth climbed out of the Ark at Ararat and humanity started once again.
