Sheki is a small, beautifully historic town in North-western Azerbaijan, along the ancient Silk Road. The city has much to offer its visitors from charming back streets, textile museums and craft workshops to antiques, bazaar’s and cobbled streets.

The locals are friendly, the food is good and fresh spring water runs through town, coming from the Greater Caucasus that are its backdrop.

As a conservative town, it is more common to see the men and boys on the streets than women. As part of the Silk Road, Sheki was famous for its Kelaghayi, a traditional Azerbaijani silk shawl decorated with woodblock prints. There are plenty of gift shops to visit to purchase good quality carpets or scarves.

Sheki’s signature dish is piti – a chunky stew made with meat, chickpeas and mixed vegetables, served in a small earthenware pot with lots of bread. For desert try some halva a sticky nut slice drenched in syrup.
