Overlooking Tbilisi this ancient fortress is considered the "Mother Fortress of Georgia" and consists of two walled sections between the sulphur baths at the fortress's foot and the botanical gardens situated behind it. Offering panoramic views of Tbilisi, it is accessible either by walking or a scenic cable car ride.

It was built in the 4th century as a Persian citadel, with the most recent walls built in the 17th century. An earthquake destroyed the inner part of this fortress, but the walls remained standing.

Split between a lower and upper section; the upper part is closed while the lower area is where you will find a built-in staircase towering 10 meters high, stone foundations and ruins. The St. Nicholas Church sits in the centre of the green was restored in the 1990s. The inside filled with frescoes depicting scenes from the Bible as well as the history of Georgia.
