Peru: Andes to the Amazon

Arrive in Peru's vibrant capital, Lima, where you'll be met and transferred to your hotel. The remainder of the day is yours to relax or begin exploring one of South America's most fascinating cities.

This morning, take a guided tour of Lima's UNESCO-recognised historic centre. Admire the elegant Plaza Mayor, home to the impressive Basilica Cathedral. You will also visit San Francisco Monastery, famed for its magnificent library and ancient catacombs. This afternoon is at leisure to explore at your own pace.

A short flight brings you to elegant Arequipa, framed by three snow-capped volcanoes. This afternoon, explore its charming colonial streets, visit the colourful Santa Catalina Monastery and enjoy sweeping views across the city from the Yanahuara district.

Leaving Arequipa behind, travel into Peru's spectacular Andean highlands. Pass grazing vicuñas, traditional villages and dramatic volcanic scenery before descending into the beautiful Colca Valley, where breathtaking mountain landscapes stretch in every direction.

Rise early to visit one of Colca Canyon's most spectacular viewpoints. With a little luck, Andean condors can be seen soaring above the canyon on the morning thermals. Continue across the vast Altiplano, passing shimmering lakes and remote Andean communities on your journey to the shores of Lake Titicaca and Puno.

Today, explore the world's highest navigable lake, crossing its deep-blue waters to visit the floating reed islands of the Uros people. Continue to Taquile Island, where centuries-old weaving traditions and welcoming communities offer an insight into local life, complemented by sweeping views across the lake.

Board the elegant Titicaca Train for one of South America's most memorable rail journeys. As magnificent Andean scenery unfolds outside, enjoy gourmet dining, live music and traditional performances before arriving in the former Inca capital of Cusco.

This morning, head into the Sacred Valley to discover some of Peru's finest Inca treasures. Visit the traditional weaving community of Chinchero, admire the remarkable circular terraces of Moray and explore the impressive fortress of Ollantaytambo, one of the best preserved Inca settlements in the country.

Begin the day exploring the colourful market and impressive Inca ruins at Pisac, set high above the Sacred Valley. Continue to the dazzling white salt pans of Maras before boarding the Vistadome train to the small town of Aguas Calientes, travelling through stunning Andean scenery along the Urubamba River.

Hidden amongst mist-covered peaks, Machu Picchu is one of the world's greatest archaeological treasures. Explore its temples, terraces and ceremonial plazas as your guide reveals the fascinating history of the Inca civilisation. There will also be time to pause and appreciate the spectacular mountain setting that has captivated visitors for generations.

Return to Cusco by train and uncover the rich history of the ancient Inca capital. Wander through its historic streets before visiting the mighty fortress of Sacsayhuaman and the impressive archaeological sites that overlook the city.

The landscapes change dramatically as you leave the Andes behind for the Peruvian Amazon. Fly to Puerto Maldonado, and travel to your jungle lodge by boat before setting out on an introductory rainforest walk. Later, venture onto the river as dusk falls and the rainforest comes alive with the sounds of nocturnal wildlife.

Spend two full days discovering the extraordinary biodiversity of the Amazon. A peaceful canoe journey across Lake Sandoval offers the chance to spot some of the Amazon's remarkable wildlife in its natural habitat. Follow canopy walkways, crossing suspension bridges high above the forest floor for a completely different perspective of the jungle's ecosystem.
