Thanks to its exotic, tropical locale and relaxed but buzzing energy, Galle is one of Sri Lanka’s must visit destinations. Built by the Dutch in 1663 over an original Portuguese structure, the town’s focal point is the old fort, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which sits on a promontory that juts out into the sparkling blue of the Indian Ocean. Within its old walls there are plenty of narrow streets to wander, architecture treasures to spot and boutique shops and galleries to browse. The coast surrounding Galle boasts some beautiful stretches of sand, and is also known for its turtle hatcheries, perfect for some post-tour relaxation.
