Long before Halong Bay became the tourist attraction that it is today, the ancient Viet people lived on and around the area, fishing the rich waters, the islands of the bay being too harsh and rocky to be cultivated. Some of these communities still exist today, making a living from both fishing and tourism and retaining their fascinating, unique way of life. Composed of floating wooden houses that rise and fall with the tides, each village is home to 30-50 families, and often have a floating school.
