Galle’s fort is one of Sri Lanka’s most relaxed and lovely places to explore. A busy port long before the Portuguese arrived, it was at Galle that they first made landfall, building an earthen-walled fort some years later on a rocky peninsula - when the Dutch arrived in the late 16th century it was properly fortified. What you’ll find today is a vibrant small walled town packed with old world charm, with many wonderful examples of the Dutch colonial style. It is best explored by walking the walls or bustling alleyways where you’ll stumble upon Dutch-style churches, mosques, museums and a plethora of boutique shops and cafes.
